This beautiful French basket (also called Bouyricou) were traditionally made in the Perigord, Dordogne regions. Apparently they were used for gathering Jerusalem artichokes, potatoes, walnuts and mushrooms. As an agricultural basket, the open spiral of 'spokes' at the bottom of the basket helped dirt and stones to fall through after shaking or swilling the basket and produce in a stream or river.
